WWII mine exploded by experts

A World War II bomb that washed up on a city beach was safely exploded by experts on Monday.

The device was found by a member of the public out for a walk in Aberdeen at about 3:40pm on Sunday.

Police closed down the main road leading to the beach for several hours as they took advice from explosive experts.

The area ended up being cordoned off overnight because it would have been too dark for the unit to safely work at the scene by the time they arrived from Edinburgh.

The Beach Esplanade road was eventually re-opened and police remained at the scene guarding the device until yesterday morning.
